The procedure, in context

When Progress Stalls, A Different Approach May Be Worth Exploring.

Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is an outpatient, non-surgical procedure for selected patients with persistent musculoskeletal pain and restricted motion that has not adequately improved with conservative care.

A licensed anesthesia professional provides sedation while a trained MUA physician performs controlled stretching and mobilization. There are no incisions. Structured follow-up rehabilitation is an important part of the process.

Areas of treatment

Regions commonly evaluated.

Whether any area is appropriate for MUA depends entirely on your individual evaluation.

Research & standards

Published guidance, honestly presented.

AMT evaluates every candidate against published, guideline-based selection criteria. If MUA isn’t appropriate, we’ll tell you.

What guidelines are

A standard of practice

Guidelines describe how MUA should be selected, documented, performed, and followed up. They are not proof that MUA works for everyone.

What trials show

Limited evidence base

Research on spinal MUA consists largely of observational studies and case series. Some insurers consider it investigational.
